Adoptions on the rise for CASA kids

ALBION – Social distancing requirements, in light of the COVID pandemic, has forced many volunteers and staff members at Northeastern Indiana CASA to look for unconventional ways to advocate for the children they serve.

The nonprofit works to advocate for children in five area counties who are in the judicial system. Taking time to visit the child’s home and school is part of the job, one that’s been limited due to the pandemic. However, staff members and volunteers have adapted to make sure every child they serve knows they are not alone and that their CASA is standing beside them — virtually or at a distance of at least six feet. Volunteers have been Face-timing, calling, texting and sending letters and cards to make sure kids are safe and as okay as they can be right now.

Although the COVID crisis has slowed down some traditional methods of serving children, Northeastern Indiana CASA’s results have escalated. Since March 10 children have been adopted, and Executive Director Brooke Griggs says that’s something to celebrate.

“This is a big number for us, especially given the extenuating circumstances we’re dealing with,” Griggs said. “It’s something for us to get excited about because not only do these kids have a forever home, an adoption means their court case closes. It gives the kid a chance to just be a kid and not feel the tension or apprehension of a court case. It’s a win for us and a win for them.”

More than 500 children were served in 2019 by volunteers and staff members at Northeastern Indiana CASA. The nonprofit has been working diligently to maintain a zero-waitlist, meaning no children are waiting for an available volunteer. To do so recruiting volunteers is still a key facet of the nonprofit’s focus. Volunteers can begin by completing and online application before an interview process is held. Once the volunteer is approved, training sessions begin to prepare them for the task. Those interested in learning how to volunteer can find more information as well as the online application at www.neincasa.net
